CranioSacral Therapy

What is CranioSacral Therapy?

“The CranioSacral session helped my hip! I’m out running this morning and have no pain!” – Christine D.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch approach that releases tensions in the in the body to relieve dysfunction and pain, and improve overall health and functioning.

Stress, injury, and strain can the body’s connective tissue, or fascia, to tighten, which in turn can impact the brain and spinal cord, comprising the function of the central nervous system and other body systems. The central nervous system plays a major role in our health and well-being — and few body systems have more of an impact on the CNS than the craniosacral system.

CranioSacral Therapy uses gentle, targeted touch to release tension in the fascia, freeing the central nervous system so that it can perform optimally. In this way, CST has been found to reduce pain, headaches, and stress, enhance health and well-being, and even strengthen resistance to disease.

Founded by osteopathic physician John E. Upeldger, the principals of CranioSacral Therapy were based on the results of nearly a decade of scientific studies by an expert team of anatomists, biophysicists, bioengineers, physiologists and himself. The results of their research explained the function of the craniosacral system, including it’s use in not only evaluating but also treating poorly understood issues in the brain and spinal cord.

CST is safe, gentle, and effective for people of all ages, from newborn babies to the elderly.

What Can I Expect from a Winter Garden CranialSacral Therapy Session?

A CranioSacral Therapy session is similar to a massage appointment, except you stay full clothed. The appointment takes places in a quiet, private room with you relaxing on a comfortable, padded table.

Your appointment will begin with a consultation to identify troubled areas. Then your highly trained CranioSacral Therapy practitioner will start gently touching various parts of your head, neck, and body to assess the fluid that is flowing around your central nervous system as well as any  possible restrictions or disruptions in your fascia.

Through these techniques, your therapist can trace the areas of the weakness to their original source of dysfunction, and then, using light touch and fascial release, manually release the problem areas.

CranioSacral Therapy can be used alone or integrated with other healing modalities to facilitate powerful changes, including improving the form and function of your central nervous system. What you experience from your session is highly individual, although most patients report feeling deep relaxation, as well as warmth and even gentle pulsing in the areas the therapist works on.
